Amorotti is located in Loreto Aprutino, the same village as legendary producer Lorenzo Valentini, with Amorotti maker Gaetano Carboni and Lorenzo living on the same street. Like Valentini, Amorotti makes distinctly traditional wines, with this direct press rosé receiving a year’s élevage in old oak barrels giving it a depth and length of flavour unlike pale, ‘blush’ rose.

Pair with the aubergine goodness of Sicilian caponata antipasto, charcuterie, or your fave ‘za.

This premium Côtes-du-Rhône from established Rhône producer Jean-Louis Chave brings serious structure to a modest label. Sourced from hillside vineyards in Vinsobres and Cairanne, the Grenache-Syrah blend is made with the same precision that defines the family’s benchmark Hermitage.

Expect dark berries, blackcurrant and wild thyme, with a whisper of garrigue. The palate is firm yet poised, with fine tannins and a mineral backbone that gives length and clarity.

Pair with herb-crusted lamb, aubergine gratin or roast chicken.

Sarah Perez runs one of the most respected estates in Spain’s Priorato region (and Spain more generally). Established in 1989, it’s evolved significantly to focus mainly on varieties with heritage like garnacha and cariñena and less so international varieties like merlot, cabernet sauvignon, or syrah. A member of the 5 largest wineries in the region, Mas Martinet is the only established by a non-winemaking family – instead, it was founded by oenologists seeking to express Priorato unique terroirs sustainably. Organic vineyards, concrete tanks, indigenous yeast, and slow fermentation lead to complex flavours.

Serve with smoky dishes like barbecued chicken, a black bean and cheese burrito, or asparagus.

Mencía from Bierzo rarely feels this precise, yet so unforced. Raúl Pérez’s Ultreia Saint Jacques is a masterclass in how to coax both energy and depth from old vines without overworking the fruit. Sourced from vineyards planted between 1900 and 1940 around Valtuille de Abajo, this is technically his “entry-level” bottling, though it behaves like anything but. The blend includes small amounts of Bastardo (Trousseau), Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet), and Palomino, fermented mostly as whole clusters in large oak vats. Macerations stretch up to two months, followed by ageing in neutral barrels and concrete. No fining, no filtration.

The result is a low-intervention red wine with a distinctly Atlantic soul. It’s lifted, savoury, and finely tuned, with a structure that’s both approachable and quietly age-worthy. Pérez’s touch here is all about restraint and clarity, allowing the Bierzo terroir to speak in its native dialect.

Expect sour cherry, violet, and black tea, with a flicker of graphite and tomato leaf.
